~ Saturday July 23rd, 2011 ~ Jordan and I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and photographing Noelle and Jeff's wedding a few weeks ago in Poway. The ceremony was held at the newly built St. Gabriels Roman Catholic Church. It was a beautfiul, bright and grand location for a ceremony. It was also the very first wedding ceremony ever held at the new church, Noelle and Jeff just made Poway history! After their beautiful ceremony we took a couple pictures as seen below, then we headed over to The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo for their ceremony. It was a wonderful celebration with great guests, great food and an awesome live band called Mariner. They specialize in 60's, 70's and 80's classic hits and it was refreshing to hear a live band in this era of automated music. On behalf of Jordan and myself, I would like to wish Noelle and Jeff many blessings on their beautiful future together. Monday July 18th, 2011 ~ Congratulations to Christine and Nate! The Orange County newlyweds tied the knot in historic downtown Fullerton California, at the Villa Del Sol complex in the heart of the community. Living in San Diego, I dont shoot to many urban located weddings, as most are at winery's, beaches or resort's. However, I am stoked when I get the opportunity to do so! We took this picture in an alley behind an Irish pub. It almost looks like Christine and Nate were transported to the Emerald Isle (Ireland) for this photograph. I created a couple layers in my editing production to bring out the depth and drama in the beautiful rustic brick work.

This was a fun and daring picture of the bride and groom shot in downtown Fullerton at an intersection. Thanks to all who were watching traffic behind my back!

July 17th 2011 ~ Congratulations Mary Beth and Steven! I was fortunate enough to be hired for this wonderful couple's wedding and it was an honor photographing their ceremony at the scenic Cuvier Park (La Jolla Wedding Bowl) here in San Diego. It was great weather for the wedding guests with cool overcast July skies. Being that it was midday, it wasnt to hot for the attendee's. The bride Mary Beth looked stunning and her great personality shined throughout the miday ceremony. Steven is a lucky groom and I'm sure he knows it! Congratulations again to you both, it appears that you both make a perefect couple, complimenting each other in all the perfect ways! Below are a couple pictures from the morning ceremony, hope you enjoy them as much as I did taking them!

A traditional, yet beautiful shot of Mary Beth and Steven. It was miday and overcast, which tends to wash out everything in pictures. I wanted to get as much depth out of the image as possible so I did a premium edit on this one and the other three in this series...to give em that Michael Coy Photography color pop! ;)

This shot was taken below the Park on the sandstone cliff...more color and more pop!

Same location on the sandstone cliff. However on this picture I gave it an old school vintage edit just to mix things up a little bit. There is something about these timeless pictures that I truly love.

~ WEDDING TIPS 101 ~ San Diego Wedding Planning

Ok my friends, here are some tips from Michael Coy Photography on having an awesome beach wedding in San Diego, California.

1) LOCATION: San Diego has many beautiful beaches, however some beaches are suited better for small weddings(40 people or less) and intimate ceremonies. Problably two of the most popular locations would be Coronado Beach on Coronado Island and The Wedding Bowl (Cuvier Park) in La Jolla. Both locations can offer spectacular panoramic ocean views for some incredible wedding or engagement photos. Most of the beach/ocean themed photos you see on the Michael Coy website are shot at these two locations. Also the parking and space needed for your ceremony at these spots is pretty good at most times. As far as Coronado Beach is concerened, I know of a pretty reliable and convienent street to park on...It's close to the beach and free! :) Hit me up anytime and I'll get you the info.

2) WHAT TO WEAR: Keep in mind alot of beach ceremonies are on the sand and sometimes by the water where its cooler for you and your guests. Do you want an expensive silk garment exposed to these elements? The great thing about a beach ceremony is that casualwear done right can work really well. Either way, if you decide to do formal or casual, flowing light material (veil, dress, etc) for the bride always provdides incredible photographs with the beach breeze. Also, let your guests know it's a good idea to have a jacket or something warm handy.When the San Diego marine layer rolls in( fog) during certain months of the year it can cool things down pretty quickly.

3) THEME: A beach theme is always effective. Over the years I have seen alot of sea shell themed invitations, flip flops(called slippahz in Hawaii) floral lei's,etc. A simple but well thought out beach themed wedding done right can provide just as much beauty and drama as a multi million dollar winery or resort...minus the expense.

4) SAND CEREMONY: Alot of couples decide to add a little flare to their ceremonies by having a candle ceremony. As beautiful and significant that a candle ceremony can be, they can also be a problem outdoors with the breeze or wind. I've witnessed many brides and grooms slightly panic over trying to light a candle that just wont cooperate with the wind as their guests look on in agony. Trust me this is something you dont want on your wedding day. A sand ceremony is always a great option. It's basically where the bride and groom take turns filling up a tall glass vessel from two smaller one's. The sand from the two smaller vessels contains different color sand, like blue and white for example. Also another cool thing about the sand ceremony is that you can place it somewhere special in your home, as opposed to a candle that blows out alot of times before the ceremony is even over. Check with your officiant for the sand ceremony details, some of them will provide what you need usually for a nominal fee.

5) PHOTOGRAPHER: Choose a photographer that is a proffesional at photographing weddings on San Diego beaches. Along with dealing with natural lighting challenges and the beach elements. Make sure to check out their portfolio/gallery, you want to love their beach pictures, not just like them. Remember these are once in a lifetime photographs we are talking about. Your photographer should have a vast knowledge of beach enviroment photography to provide you with a quick and efficent photography session. As much as brides and grooms love incredible wedding pictures, they don't love spending alot of unecessary time capturing them. Afterall you just got married...it's time to go celebrate and have fun!

On July 9th, 2011 Michael Coy Photography of San Diego, had the great pleasure of joining Tiffany Rose and Keith for their wedding ceremony and reception held in the beautiful community of Fallbrook..North County, San Diego. It was an awesome event with a great group of friends and family in attendance. All the guests were in great spirits, the music was pumpin and the wedding was fun celebration to say the least.

One of my favorite pictures from the wedding...lots of depth and moodiness. It was shot poolside with a tiki torch helping me out with the lighting in the foreground.

Tiffany Rose and Keith's great...and true personalities coming through the lens on this picture. They are a very fun and vibrant couple, which was very evident in sharing these great moments with them.

A traditonal shot after the ceremony. It was almost dark outside, without any decent lighting source and I did not want to wash them out with my flash. So I shot this picture without the flash giving the image depth and emotion.

Another classic picture shot without an overpowering flash. My objective was to create a timeless and powerful image on this one.

This shot and the one above was from their first dance. I get some of my most memorable wedding pictures from the first dance...alot of beautiful emotion!

The Perfect Fabric for a Beautiful Beach Wedding

A beach wedding dress can be as casual or as formal as you choose.
Your beach wedding can be formal and quite elegant even though it's outdoors in a serene environment.

Consider the natural scenery as it will be at the time of the wedding:
The colors in the sky and the sun on the water are different in the morning than at sunset. Keeping colors in tune with the natural surroundings adds to the ambience of a beach wedding.

Why spend hundreds of dollars on flowers to create the backdrop when nature provides all of that splendor free? And you can weave the colors of Mother Nature into your wedding apparel using a brightly colored wedding sarong or one that resembles a traditional wedding dress.

The beach bride who wants an actual wedding dress may want to avoid traditional local wedding dress shops. Instead, choose a flowing slip dress, an eyelet sundress or a silk wedding sarong wrap.

Rhinestone sandals and flowers or a jeweled clip in the hair makes a chic look for a beach wedding.

Congratulations Catherine and Max on your new journey together! Catherine and Max, Drove out to San Diego from Colorado with their two best friend...their doggies.

They held a small wedding ceremony with family that came out across the country as well. The ceremony was held at the beautiful Coronado Beach on Coronado Island here in San Diego, California. If you couldn't tell by now shooting at the ocean after the rain is one of my favorite scenarios...tons of color and drama. Below are couple of shots from Mary and Casey's post ceremony shoot. I edited the above image with a watercolor painting feel to it. It was shot on the grass turf area at the La Jolla Wedding Bowl. The stormy waters provided for some great power and drama in this photo as well. Mary and Casey perched on lonestanding sandstone. The sunset was incredibly bold and brilliant on this day after the rain, as seen in this image.

~ January 15th 2011. On this beautiful sunny day in San Diego (Mount Soledad) my wife Jordan and I were honored and blessed to capture Tara Beth and Clay's beautiful La Jolla wedding tale. It was just another wonderful experience, with two wonderful people and their fantastic guests. This day was another perfect event that we were fortunate to be appart of. With a wild rainstorm hitting Southern California (actually the entire West Coast) a couple weeks back. I was summoned to capture Julie and Justins seaside ceremony in beautiful Coronado California. It was pouring rain on my way to Coronado, it stopped for their 15 minute ceremony, then started pouring again. As Julie and Justin were in their pink caddilac getting ready to go to their ceremony, I grrabbed them for a couple quick shots at the beach...below is one of them.

Mallory and Kurtis travelled all the way from Arkansas to Huntington Beach, California to tie the knot. It was a beautiful intimate ceremony with Mallory's parents in attendance. What made it even more special, was the fact that Mallory and Kurtis have never been to California, let alone see the ocean!

I was so happy for them all, besides being incredibly nice and beautiful people with that true sincere southern politeness in full effect. Was the fact that it was raining earlier that mid September day, then it cleared out to the glorious beautiful Southern California sunset skies you see in the pictures below.

CRYSTAL AND DAN ARE NOW MARRIED!!!

It's official Crystal and Dan are now married! This great young couple tied the knot on Saturday, August 28th, 2010 at the historical and beautiful Leo Carrillo Ranch Park in Carlsbad, Ca.

Crystal looked stunning of course and her husband Dan looked very sharp as well. They are a really cool and fun couple, as was there family and guests. To say the least it made up for an incredible experience for all. Congrats again Crystal and Dan, we wish you both the very best!

We could tell that Crystal and Dan have great chemistry, just from this shot alone. They were very releaxed, affectionate and comfortable with each other behind the camera...which is always a good thing! ;)

A world class shot at a world class location. I really like getting reflection shots of the water and the beautiful mountains, scenery around Los Willows helped frame Donna and Michael perfectly.

Los Willows has a cool wooden bridge on the side of the property that provided for this great interactive shot of the newlyweds.

This past weekend Danyelle and Alex exchanged vows and are now a happily married couple. Danyelle looked stunning in one of the most beautiful gowns a bride could ask for, and Alex looked sharp in his white tux. My wife and I are so happy for both Danyelle and Alex, as they are a wonderful couple that will achieve great things in their lives together. They also come from great families and it was a joy to meet and work with them all.

The wedding was a fairytale wedding, complete with a horse drawn carriage processsion held at the world class Humphrey's Estate in wine country Temecula California. This past Sunday I met up with soon to be newlyweds Jennifer and Sonny at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside California, for their engagement shoot. They are a really cool and fun couple and I am happy for them both. They both looked great and we got some incredible shots at their Sunset shoot. I decided to spend some extra time on a couple of the edits below, as the pictures had so much potential for the fine art look that I love.

I really like this picture on the Oceanside Pier as it has that timeless old school romantic story feel to it. The weather was great as it was a day after some spring showers and another storm was rollin in, it really created some incredible light.

AVA AND PRESTON...A DAY IN THE PARK !

My wife Jordan and I had the opportunity to spend some time with a great family last Friday afternoon. Shawna and her two wonderful children...daughter Ava and Son Preston met up with us at Live Oak Park in Fallbrook. On a beautiful spring day for some fun in the sun and some great photographic moments. I don't know who had more fun my wife and I or the kids!

Prestons putting all his strength into climbing up that slide backwards. He stuck with it and made it all the way...gooooooo Preston!

Here is beautiful Ava on the see-saw with her little brother Preston. She was so pleasant and you could tell that she is a kind soul the way she took care of her little brother while they were playing at the park.

Here's a closeup shot of Preston, he was such a fun little guy! This was his last day of rock n roll freedom before he got his big haircut the following day.

Preston rockin out on his guitar. He is only 5 and he was jamming row,row,row your boat...he's gonna rip one day if he keeps up his lessons and practices.

PRIYA AND HERSH ARE GETTING MARRIED!

A few weeks ago my lovely wife and photography partner Jordan and I ventured up the I-5 to Orange County to photograph an engagement party held at the Tustin Ranch Golf Course. The wonderful young couple Priya and Hersh were so nice and looked stunning in their traditonal Hindu attire. My wife and I just love and admire the Indian culture.. it's so vibrant, ancient, wisdom filled and beautiful. While we photographed Priya and Hersh's formal shots we tried to capture that traditional beauty and color in the shots below.

Priya's Henna Tattooed hand's holding Hersh's hand. The proccess of these tattoo's described to us by Priya is amazing. The artwork is so intricate and beautiful beyond words.

A vivid, dramatic and wide open shot of the wonderful couple. In front of one of the waterways at tustin ranch golf club during sunset...we love color!

A simple,powerful sephia (gold tinted color) themed composition. I'm a big fan of sephia as it can present so much drama via depth and simplicity.

Same location as the previous shot, but a slightly different angle.

A beautiful smile, on a beautiful Southern California day.

Our final shot of the formal session and then it was off to their eagerly awaiting guests.

MAYBELYN AND RICHARD CORONADO CEREMONY

I had the great fortune of being invited to shoot Maybelyn and Richards Coronado Beach wedding the day after San Diego had a big rainstorm. The afterain shoots are some of my favorite, as the air is clear and fresh and the colors are so vibrant.

What a wonderful wedding ceremony shoot, the beautiful bride and stylish groom looked great and were in high spirits. There wasn't a cloud in the crystal clear sky and the late afternoon lighting was perfect!

I just wanted to get Maybelyn and Richards silloutte's against the great big blue backdrop of the sky as they connected in each others love...it worked.

Haha, yes that is a real chopper and not photoshopped...lots of aircraft buzzing around Coronado as you may know. I saw it approaching and had to get it in the frame, I love the surrealness of it!

The contrast of a lonely beach and the populated condos really compliment each other in this one.It definatley produces an other wordly feel especially with the cranked up blue saturation.

A simple and effective reflection shot. Sometimes simple is best, actually I think simplicity is always best! :)

Yet another simple shot that is very emotional and powerful for the viewer.

The sun was perfectley placed behind Maybelyn and Richard to create this great profile and veil shot.It definatley has a modern, contemporary feel.

The newlyweds braved the slippery rocks and incoming tide in front of the Hotel Del Coronadoto to get this vintage swept away edge of the earth look.

Lots of red, white and blue! Just a great vivid shot of Rich and Maybelyn on the rocks in front of the Hotel Del Coronado.

This was one of my favorite shots of the day, this youngster was so cool and his great personality just comes through in this image. With his ear to ear grin, the smiley face (temporary) tattoo on his arm and his giving posture...this kid is awesome!

ANIA AND HECTOR TIE THE KNOT! * SPECIAL VINTAGE PHOTO EDITING

I have a great love for vintage photographs, which is shown below in the images from Ania and Hectors San Diego Hotel Del Coronado wedding. It was a mid-day ceremony, so the sun was high and bright. The sun combined with a strong coastal haze made for a great opportunity to do some vintage editing on a handful of their pictures.

Ania was a very beautiful bride as was her wedding dress.. and Hector complemented his gorgeous bride very well. They were the definition of class and beauty that sunny San Diego day.

Above is a compliation piece of Ania and Hector just after their ceremony sharing a special moment, very vintage indeed...timeless and I love it.

This one reminds me of how some photographs fade out from my childhood era...the 70's and 80's. Ania and Hector look great and they are ready to pop off the computer screen!
